Frequently asked questions · Residence permit

I changed employer with a work permit: do I need a conversion?

Direct answer: changing employer is not automatically a conversion; it depends on the permit reason and validity. Check the new contract, report required changes and keep mandatory employment notices. Steps: read the permit category, ask the competent office whether an update is needed, and keep the contract and UNILAV notice. If employment ends, check the job-search permit route where applicable. Sources: Articles 6 and 22 TUI and Portale Integrazione Migranti; checked 24/10/2026.

Who this applies to: Anyone changing employer while holding a work-authorising permit and needing to check whether a notice or new procedure is required.

Practical steps: 1) check that the permit category already allows work and is not seasonal; 2) keep the new contract and have the employer file the mandatory hiring notice; 3) report the change only through the channel required by the Questura or permit and attach contract, identity document and permit; 4) start a conversion procedure only if the permit category requires it.

Documents to keep: permit or receipt, ID, tax code, new contract and mandatory employment filing.

Verifiable timing and costs: Validity follows the permit reason; there is no conversion fee where conversion is not legally required.

Exceptions and special cases: Study and family routes have their own rules; an expired or refused title does not authorise hiring.

If the procedure stalls: Request written confirmation before starting if the permit wording is unclear.

Practical example: With a valid work permit, the new employer keeps a copy and files the mandatory notice.
